What is Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. It is recognized as one of the most widespread STIs in Nepal and globally. Chlamydia is notorious for being a silent infection—up to 70% of infected women and 50% of infected men show zero clinical symptoms.

Critical Health Risk: Even without noticeable symptoms, untreated Chlamydia bacteria continuously damage reproductive organs. In women, it can lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), ectopic pregnancy, and chronic infertility. In men, it causes epididymitis (painful testicular inflammation) and reactive arthritis.

Testing Window Period

Accurate detection depends on allowing the bacteria enough time to multiply within mucosal cells:

Earliest Detection 5 to 7 Days post-exposure
Definitive Reliable Window 14 Days post-exposure

*Testing earlier than 5 days may lead to a false negative due to low bacterial count.

Symptom Timeframe

When symptoms do present, they typically manifest 1 to 3 weeks after contact:

In Men:
  • Clear/cloudy penile discharge
  • Burning sensation during urination
  • Testicular pain or heaviness
In Women:
  • Abnormal yellowish discharge
  • Bleeding between menstrual cycles
  • Lower abdominal/pelvic discomfort

*Up to 70% of infected females exhibit zero symptoms.

Sample Requirement & Preparation

Adhering to correct preparation guarantees high analytical accuracy.

For Men: First-Catch Urine (No Swab)

You do not need an uncomfortable urethral swab. The NAAT test accurately detects bacterial DNA shed directly into the urine.

Mandatory Protocol: Do not urinate for at least 1 to 2 hours prior to sample collection. Catch only the initial 20 to 30 ml of the urine stream (not mid-stream).
For Women: Vaginal Swab or Urine

A clinician-collected or self-collected vaginal swab provides the highest sensitivity for females. Urine testing is also available.

Protocol: Avoid vaginal douching, medicinal creams, or sexual intercourse for 24 hours prior to providing a vaginal swab.
No Fasting Required: Standard food and water intake do not affect NAAT molecular assays.

Why NAAT (PCR) is the Gold Standard

Older diagnostic methods (such as rapid test strips or bacterial smear cultures) are notoriously prone to false negatives because they require large numbers of live organisms. Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing (NAAT) operates on a molecular level:

> 99% Sensitivity

NAAT amplifies minute fragments of bacterial DNA millions of times, detecting infections even when bacterial loads are microscopic.

Non-Invasive

Completely eliminates the requirement for invasive male urethral scraping, allowing easy first-catch urine collection.

Unmatched Specificity

Zero cross-reactivity with normal urinary flora. A positive NAAT confirms active Chlamydia trachomatis presence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Chlamydia be completely cured?

Yes. Because Chlamydia is a bacterial infection, it can be cured with specific antibiotic regimens prescribed by a specialist doctor. Both you and your partner must be treated simultaneously to prevent re-infection.

Can I test for Gonorrhea from the same urine sample?

Yes! Chlamydia and Gonorrhea frequently occur together as co-infections. We provide a combined multiplex panel or our Triple STD Combo (CT, NG, UU) for Rs 9,400 from the exact same sample.

How will I receive my confidential report?

Your report is delivered directly to your personal WhatsApp or password-protected PDF via email. Physical hard-copy collection from our Basundhara facility is also available.
