Mycoplasma genitalium NAAT Test in Kathmandu

Apollo Diagnostic Center provides targeted NAAT testing for Mycoplasma genitalium (MG). Often overlooked in routine cultures, MG is a major cause of non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) and cervicitis that frequently demonstrates resistance to standard antibiotics.

What is Mycoplasma genitalium?

Mycoplasma genitalium is a tiny, slow-growing sexually transmitted bacterium. Unlike typical bacteria, it completely lacks a rigid cell wall, which makes it totally immune to common antibiotics like penicillin and cephalosporins. It is now recognized by the CDC and WHO as a primary cause of recurrent urethritis in men and pelvic inflammation in women.

Why You Need a NAAT: Traditional microbiology cultures cannot grow Mycoplasma genitalium (it can take up to 6 months to culture in vitro). A molecular NAAT/PCR is the only accurate method to confirm diagnosis and prevent blind antibiotic overuse.

Testing Window Period

Because MG replicates at a very slow pace:

Earliest Detection 14 Days post-exposure
Optimal Window 21 - 28 Days post-exposure

Common Symptoms

Men: Clear watery discharge, persistent burning at the tip of the urethra that returned after taking azithromycin or doxycycline.

Women: Post-coital bleeding, painful urination, unusual vaginal odor or discharge.

Sample Requirement & Preparation

Men: First-Catch Urine

Catch the first 20-30 ml of urine. Must hold urine for at least 1 to 2 hours beforehand.

Women: Vaginal Swab or Urine

A self-collected or clinician-assisted vaginal swab provides the highest analytical sensitivity.

Expert Care at Derma Clinic

Mycoplasma infections require specific multi-stage antibiotic regimens (such as moxifloxacin or targeted macrolides) to avoid treatment failure. Apollo Diagnostic is clinically partnered with Derma Clinic in Basundhara Chowki, where Dr. Utsav Sharma provides personalized venereology care following positive NAAT results.
