About Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It targets mucosal surfaces including the urethra, cervix, rectum, and pharynx. Left untreated, Gonorrhea can disseminate into the bloodstream causing septic arthritis, chronic pelvic inflammatory disease in females, and painful epididymitis in males.

Testing Window Period

Gonorrhea replicates rapidly compared to other STDs:

Earliest Detection 5 Days post-exposure
Optimal Window 14 Days post-exposure

*If symptoms (like pus discharge) are actively visible, testing can be conducted immediately.

Symptom Timeframe

Symptoms often manifest quickly, within 2 to 14 days:

In Men:
  • Thick yellowish or green urethral pus
  • Intense burning during urination
  • Swollen or painful testicles
In Women:
  • Increased vaginal discharge
  • Painful urination
  • Intermenstrual bleeding

*Women often mistake early Gonorrhea for a minor bladder infection.

Sample Requirement & Preparation

Non-invasive first-catch urine or swab specimen.

Men: First-Catch Urine (No Painful Swab)

Do not urinate for at least 1 to 2 hours before visiting the lab. Collect the very first 20 to 30 ml of urine in the sterile container.

Women: Vaginal Swab or Urine

Vaginal swab provides the highest sensitivity. Do not use vaginal douching or creams 24 hours prior.

Why NAAT (PCR) Over Gram's Stain?

While a Gram's stain (Rs 1,000) is rapid for acute symptomatic males with active discharge, NAAT Testing (Rs 6,000) is required for complete clinical reliability:

Clinical Feature Gram's Stain Microscopy (Rs 1,000) Gonorrhea NAAT / PCR (Rs 6,000)
Sensitivity in Symptomatic Men High (~95%) > 99%
Sensitivity in Asymptomatic Men Low (Fails to detect) > 99%
Accuracy in Women Unreliable (Normal flora confuses test) > 99% (Definitive)
Collection Method Invasive urethral swab scraping Non-invasive First-catch Urine
